John Speed was a cartographer from Cheshire who published a series of maps of England and Wales from mapping data by Norden and Saxton. In 1611, these were released in his "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" collection, of which these prints are from the second edition published in 1614. All printed on cream coloured paper. |

 | Charles Traylen, during the accumulation of book publishing rights for his antiquarian bookshop at Castle House, bought the original plates from which the 1614 collection was published and used them to reprint the maps in the 1960s.
